Softening the blow of disclaimer text

July 15, 2016

Congratulations goes to BetaBrand.com, who captured my click when their Dress Pant Yoga Pants Promo post hit my Facebook timeline.

Okay, Betabrand, you got my click...I also can't imagine wearing normal pants ever again. Now let's define normal...

Okay, Betabrand, you got my click…I also can’t imagine wearing normal pants ever again. Now let’s define normal…

On the offer screen, the usually negative disclaimer text induces a smile:

*Tiny Bummer: 1) Cannot be combined with other discount codes and 2) not valid on previous purchases.

In school, I was assigned to write a job interview rejection letter without using any negative words. (It can be done, but not easily.) Disclaimers fall into the same category. Limiting an offer is often necessary, and can be a buzz kill, in terms of graphic design.

I like how Betabrand kept the tone of the disclaimer light, while indicating that they can see from the point of view of their customer.
